ABOUT ME
I'm a philosopher. When I first wrote this on some official document under "occupation", it sounded a cross between utterly pompous, and just plain daft. But there you are, it's true. I have a broad range of interests: when I was at Keele University, I studied every subject beginning with "P" plus a few others. Most of the work I do is in applied philosophy, a lot of it interdisciplinary. I also studied at Oxford and at Cardiff Universities, and I've worked at Oxford, Cardiff, Bristol, and the Australian National University. More to the point, I once won a Blue Peter badge for a poster I designed for the RNLI. More details on this page shortly.
THINGS I DO
RESEARCH
My first job was in the physics research labs of Ilford Films on the 400 ASA film HP5 examining objective and subjective measures of graininess . Now my research focuses on ethical issues in AI and in the care of people living with dementia.
TEACHING
My first teaching job was at Bristol Uni, the first woman ever employed in the philosophy department. The first day in work I was told that I could teach whatever I liked, so long as I considered it academically respectable. Oh halcyon days.
POLICY
Some of my work uses philosophy in the service of policy, from looking at argumentation leading to policy, to contributing to policy work in areas such as healthcare and artificial intelligence.
